According to report by mercurynews on August 14, four Iranian brothers who were detained for 41 months during an FBI terrorism investigation after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks filed a lawsuit Monday in federal court, claiming they were held on false pretenses and were "casualties of the war on terror". The brothers, Mohammed, Mostafa, Mohsen and Mojtaba Mirmehdi, were detained in October 2001 on the allegations that their names were on a list of people who attended a rally organized by National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the political wing to the blacklisted terrorist Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), in Denver.
The brothers, however, have since denied being a member or supporter of the MEK. The US government sought deportation of at least two of the brothers, but the order was barred by a court finding that they would be tortured or killed if they were returned to Iran, the country they fled after they were imprisoned there for political protests.
Not so complicated a labyrinth to get to the truth, the brothers, and the court as well, fail to clarify for what allegations the brothers would be prosecuted if they were returned to Iran. What kind of “political protests” were they indulged in to be imprisoned for in Iran? Last but not least, is it acceptable that four people are held in custody for 41 months on merely false pretenses?
