Iranian dissidents in Iraq want refuge in 3rd country

Ambassador James Jeffrey said Saturday that the U.S. was working with the United Nations to move the 3,000-plus Iranians”to a place that is a bit safer, a bit further from Iran,”but they would have to disband and allow themselves to be registered as refugees by the U.N. High Commission for Refugees.But the Paris-based leadership of the People’s Mujahedeen of Iran rejected the idea as a”non-starter”and said the Iranians would prefer to die where they now live, a location known as Camp Ashraf, than to relocate within Iraq.

Iraq to Evacuate MKO Members from Camp Ashraf

raq’s Defense Ministry Spokesman General Mohammed al-Askari reiterated that the Iraqi government is determined to evacuate the members of the anti-Iran terrorist Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) from their stronghold in the Northern Diyala province in the near future… He also said in a press conference on Thursday that four more members of the MKO have fled Camp Ashraf and defected to the Iraqi forces..The defected MKO members said that since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, the leaders of the terrorist organization have turned the camp into a prison.

Coordination Underway between Iran, Iraq over MKO Camp

Iranian Intelligence Minister Heidar Moslehi stressed Tehran’s repeated and strong call for the expulsion of the terrorist Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) from Iraq during the recent meetings between the two countries’ officials, and said Tehran and Baghdad have worked out good coordination over this issue.

Talibani: Committee formed to shut MKO Ashraf camp

… Iraq’s President Jalal Talabani says a committee has been formed to shut down a camp belonging to the anti-Iran terrorist Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO). “The government of Iraq will do all it can to prevent terrorism. We should attempt to close down MKO terrorists’ Ashraf Camp and we shall remove all those people. Those who are willing will go back to Iran. Others will go wherever they want to,” Talabani said in a speech during an anti-terrorism conference in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Saturday. Government Spokesman: Iraq is not an American colony

… The delegation reportedly told Maliki that a US congressional committee is investigating violence between Iraqi forces and members of the Iranian dissident group Mojahedi-e-Khalq Organization that killed 34 people and injured 200 at Camp Ashraf north of Baghdad. Iraq to end the existence of Camp Ashraf

… Under Secretary Hussein Zuhairi, who headed the Iraqi delegation, responded to the statement of a foreign organization [MEK lobbyists] in the Council Human Rights in which she referred to allegations launched by MKO, which live in Camp Ashraf (Camp New Iraq) in order to discredit the Iraqi government in international forums… Zuhairi stressed that the government had decided to end the Organization’s presence in the territory of the country. U.S. congressional delegation sets off political bomb in Iraq

After Rohrabacher later announced his investigation to the media, al-Maliki, who’s currently acting minister of defense as well as commander in chief, apparently hit the roof. ..The U.S. Embassy issued a statement explaining that Congress is a separate branch of government whose members often disagree with the executive branch. It said it was important for members of Congress to meet and exchange views with Iraqi leaders, “even when there are disagreements.”..
